A Recipe for a Bright Future

Teen Turns His Passion for Baking into Something Sweet

Read time: 3 minutes

For 19-year-old Elijah, a great cookie is about more than satisfying a sweet tooth. It’s an opportunity to create, connect with others and carry forward the memory of someone who helped inspire his passion in the first place.

His love of baking began when he was young, spending time in the kitchen with his grandmother, Miriam.

“Ever since I was a little child, my grandmother used to love cooking, and she introduced me to baking,” Elijah shared. As he grew older, he continued baking while also exploring another creative outlet: arts and crafts. Today, those interests often come together in the kitchen, where a sketch or design can inspire the decorations on his next cake, cupcake or cookie.

Elijah estimates he has more than 20 recipes memorized and says that, once he studies a recipe, the process often comes naturally to him. He’s already perfected favorites like chocolate chip and peanut butter chocolate chip cookies, while continuing to experiment with new flavors.

That creativity is matched by an impressive instinct for baking. Elijah estimates he has more than 20 recipes memorized and says that, once he studies a recipe, the process often comes naturally to him. He’s already perfected favorites like chocolate chip and peanut butter chocolate chip cookies, while continuing to experiment with new flavors. Among the recipes he hopes to tackle next are strawberry cookies, a colorful “Cookie Monster” creation and banana pudding cookies topped with banana cream frosting and a banana slice.

But for Elijah, the best part of baking isn’t simply pulling a perfect tray of cookies from the oven. It’s sharing what he makes.

Sharing Joy, One Cookie at a Time

As more friends and family tried Elijah’s baked goods and encouraged him to keep going, he began sharing his creations more widely in his community. On one occasion, he baked more than 60 cookies to hand out to people. The feedback has helped him hone his craft, but it has also shown him how something as simple as a homemade cookie can create a meaningful connection.

One interaction in particular stayed with him. After Elijah offered a free chocolate chip cookie to a man in the community, the man told him it reminded him of his mother’s cooking.

“I almost cried because that touched my heart,” Elijah recalled. “I didn’t realize I changed a lot of people’s lives because they like my baking.”

Those moments of connection motivate him to keep learning, experimenting and sharing.

“It makes me really happy when other people are happy,” he said.

He also welcomes constructive feedback, seeing each suggestion not as a criticism but as an opportunity to make the next batch even better. When people tell him they enjoy what he’s created, Elijah says he feels a sense of accomplishment and joy. Baking itself is also calming and relaxing for him, something that feels less like a task and more like a natural talent he can continue developing.

Honoring the Person Who Started It All

As Elijah looks toward the future, he is working to grow his passion into something bigger: his own successful baking business.

And he already has a name picked out.

Miriam’s Sweet Treats.

The name honors his grandmother, the woman who played an important role in raising him and helped foster the creativity he still brings to baking today. Elijah described Miriam as a proud Puerto Rican woman who loved her culture and whose influence continues to show up in his baking style. Just as his grandmother could prepare delicious food by instinct, Elijah says he often has an intuitive sense for ingredients and proportions in the kitchen.

Naming his future bakery after her brings his story full circle. What began as time spent together in his grandmother’s kitchen has become a passion Elijah now hopes to turn into a future of his own.

Creating Space for a Passion to Grow

Along the way, Together for Youth (TFY) has been in Elijah’s corner, helping create opportunities for him to explore and strengthen his passion.

Elijah says TFY has supported his baking by helping him access ingredients, bowls, measuring cups and packaging, providing feedback and, importantly, giving him a place to create in the kitchen.

“TFY support me by just being by my side,” Elijah said, adding that it means a lot that the people around him recognize “such a positivity and passion for something that I really do enjoy.”

That support has also helped Elijah take an important step from pursuing a passion to building something of his own.

“Donated funds helped our youth turn his passion for baking into something real,” Kristina Zeis, TFY’s Senior Vice President of Behavioral and Medical Health, said. “With this support, he purchased the equipment and supplies needed to launch his cookie business and proudly showcase his baked goods at a large community event. But the impact went far beyond baking supplies. He had the chance to stand behind something he created, share it with others, and experience what it feels like to have people believe in him and invest in his dream.”

And when Miriam’s Sweet Treats becomes the bakery Elijah envisions, its foundation will already be firmly in place: creativity, perseverance, generosity and a love of making people happy.

Sometimes, a bright future starts with a simple recipe and a willingness to share what you create. And sometimes, it starts with someone willing to believe in a young person and give them the resources and opportunities to turn their ideas into something real.
